Rich Content is King!
I’ve always made it a point to stay up on what’s happening in my industry, so when I read the uninformed writings of other local web developers, it just annoys me.
Web development firms locally, regionally and nationally are so stuck in the past that the statistics on their websites would lead you to believe that we are still stuck in the 20th Century. The problem with that is that we are about to begin the tenth year of the 21st Century – and they still DON’T GET IT!
Here are some facts:
In August 2008, broadband penetration among active Internet users in US homes grew by 0.78 percentage points to 91.54%, up from 90.76% in July. Dial-up users connecting at 56Kbps or less now make up 8.46% of active Internet users, down 0.78 percentage points from 9.24% in July 2008
As of August 2008, 96.81% of US workers connected to the Internet with broadband, up 0.3 percentage points from the 96.51% share in July. At work, 3.19% connect at 56Kbps or less.
One local developer even goes to the extent of stating the following: “Flash and heavy graphic use has no place on a business website.”
I’m certain the aforementioned quote was based on antiquated data about web site usage and bandwidth connection facts. That’s what happens when you don’t stay abreast of the industry in which you work.
Based on recent broadband access facts and web usage statistics, audio and video are becoming commonplace online. And as they are, businesses are racing to deliver rich content to a global audience. From 2003 until 2007, the combined commercial market value for dynamic Web content — including streaming video and audio, grew from $184 million to $841 million. In a recent survey, online advertising research company DoubleClick found that visitors to Websites click on video ads about five times as often as they do on static pictures or graphics. In fact, most users have come to expect streaming video and live audio on corporate sites. More than 60% of consumers say they now view video online.
Eye-catching content helps turn pedestrian Websites into compelling destinations for all ages of visitors. So, are you prepared to be left in the 20th Century because your website continues to deliver stale, static content?
